The MAC pump and John H. McLeod, Jr., its inventor.
The MAC pump in action. The blood, which seems to fill all the tubing, is really only in the bottom part. The thin layer of blood coating the upper parts of the coils is in the presence of oxygen, and this is where the oxygenation takes place. An anesthetized dog is on the table behind the stainless steel tray, its heart and lung functions being performed by the pump. It recovered.
